§1Document Structure & Elements

BayonneXML provided an open, declarative syntax analogous to VoiceXML, tailored for fast execution within GNU Bayonne:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE bayonne PUBLIC "-//GNU//DTD BayonneXML 1.0//EN"
  "http://www.gnutelephony.org/dtd/bayonnexml-1.0.dtd">
<bayonne version="1.0">
  <form id="mainMenu">
    <prompt>
      <audio src="/sounds/welcome.wav" />
      Welcome to the GNU Telephony Information Server.
    </prompt>
    <gather dtmf="1" timeout="5s">
      <option value="1" target="#projectInfo" />
      <option value="2" target="#downloadStatus" />
      <noinput>
        <audio src="/sounds/no_input.wav" />
        <reprompt />
      </noinput>
    </gather>
  </form>
</bayonne>

§2Dynamic Web Server Integration

Because BayonneXML was pure XML, web applications could generate voice responses dynamically in response to HTTP GET/POST queries, connecting the telephone network to MySQL databases and web services.
