Historical Sysadmin Guide
This guide targets legacy Ubuntu releases (10.04/12.04), SysVinit scripts, and obsolete package archives. Preserved for historical sysadmin documentation.
§1Installation via Ubuntu Repositories
During the 2010-2012 era, GNU SIP Witch was officially packaged in the Debian and Ubuntu universe repositories:
# Historical installation commands for Ubuntu 10.04 / 12.04 LTS

sudo apt-get install sipwitch sipwitch-cgi libucommon-binAlternatively, David Sugar maintained the official GNU Telephony PPA (`ppa:telephony/ppa`) for the latest stable bugfixes.
§2Service Daemon Configuration
Enable the daemon by editing `/etc/default/sipwitch`:
# /etc/default/sipwitch
PLUGINS="auto"
OPTIONS=""
DAEMON_ENABLE="true"Start the service via init script: ```bash sudo /etc/init.d/sipwitch start ```
Check service status and active registered extensions: ```bash sipwitch --status sipwitch --registry ```
§3Firewall & Network Configuration
Ensure the following ports are open: - UDP 5060: SIP signaling - UDP 5061: SIPS TLS signaling (optional) - UDP 16384-32768: Peer RTP audio range (handled peer-to-peer, but firewalls must allow established bidirectional UDP states)
